Notes:	Born 10th February 1823. Descended from a French Hugenot family. Commenced in the office of Henry Waterfall, solicitor at Sheffield. Began his own account in 1855 in London. Resided at Whiteley Wood Hall. His father Thomas was made Supervisor of Excise for the Sheffield First District on January 22 1838. A warm friendship was established between Mr. Plimsoll and W.C. Leng of the Sheffield Daily Telegraph, and was roused to the hardships and unnecessary perils of our sailors by Leng's writings. Hence the Plimsoll Line on ships.
