Notes: | A date of c. 1890 has been suggested as the Prudential building on the right is under construction. Original newspaper caption reads: - We have here one of the most interesting photographs we have published for some time, and the reader who forwards it is especially anxious to know if possible the exact date. It is certainly more than forty years ago, since it shows Pinstone Street in process of making, though, as far as we can gather, it was more than sixty years ago that Pinchercroft Lane, as it used to be, became Pinstone Street. But the right hand side of Pinstone Street, coming from the Town Hall, was already built. Whether the Town Hall itself was in course of erection we cannot say. The site seems to be out of the picture. We have been wondering what the circular building on the right of the picture was - whether that is, it represents one of those many circuses with which, according to some recent correspondence, Sheffield appears to have been studded in times past. Which newspaper and date of publication is unknown. The building was Sanger's Circus (See 1:500 OS Town Plan Sheet 294/8/21 - 1894) |
