Notes: | The engine's fireman can be seen leaning out of the cab, apparently looking forward.
A short distance further down the bank, lines from Chesterfield, Chinley and Midland station meet in a triangle; these splitting signals guarded the southern approach to that junction. The principal was, the signals on the taller post controlled traffic along the most important route: here, the stop signal on the right controlled trains northbound down the bank into Sheffield; on the shorter post this stop signal cleared trains to join the Hope Valley line towards Manchester. Beneath these, yellow signals with a black chevron were known as Distant signals, giving advance warning when a train was required to slow-down or stop further ahead.
