Further information from J Thickitt:

A continuous, evenly-shallow slope down to the track along the latter's south-east side is diagnostic for Hutcliffe Wood, situated between Millhouses and Beauchief stations.

The train appears to be climbing and together with four tracks this can be identified as the line running from Midland station southwards. It is possible to state the train was running along the pair of tracks forming the Midland Main Line towards Derby. The nearer pair diverged at Dore and Totley station and ran through Dore and Totley tunnel into the Hope Valley.

Therefore this is a passenger train passing Hutcliffe Wood on an 'Up' service.
