Carswell, of the University Officer Training Corps (OTC) served in the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI). He was the first member of the University to be killed in the war when he died on 26 Oct 1914. He is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial in Pas de Calais, France.
