Yorkshire
1900-1919

This photograph came from a collection relating to Percy Tyas of Dewsbury who was in the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry 1/4 Brigade during World War I. He has written on the back of the postcard that all the men in the group are from Sheffield.

He joined up in Wakefield as part of the 3rd West Riding Brigade, West Riding Division. Moved on mobilisation to Doncaster and in November 1914 to Gainsborough. Moved on to York (Strensall camp) in February 1915, where this photograph was taken. Landed at Boulogne-sur-Mer 12 April 1915.

Percy himself was listed as missing in the Leeds Mercury on 5 August 1916, and then is recorded at aid stations before becoming a Prisoner of War. He was injured in the leg and spent some time at Erfurt POW camp, and returned to the south of England for convalescence at the end of the war.
