James Dixon was the eldest son of Henry Isaac Dixon (1820 - 1912) of Stumperlowe Hall. He was born on 26 October 1851 at Cliffe House, Sheffield. He was educated at Weybridge, Surrey and at Neuwied on the Rhine in Germany. He married Edith Fawcett Wightman (1850 - 1934) on 2 September 1873 at Sheffield Parish Church. He became a partner in the silver and electro-plate manufacturing firm of James Dixons and Sons, Cornish Place, Sheffield. He served as Master Cutler 1887 - 1888 and was elected a Sheffield Guardian of the Poor in 1888. He was a member of the Sheffield City Council for four years up to November 1894 and also served as a Justice of the Peace for the city of Sheffield. He latterly resided at Tylecote, Sheffield.
