1851-1899

Chipping House was named after Chipping, Lancashire, which was the home of Ellen Leach, wife of John Shortridge.  It was probably built during 1851-52 because it is not listed in the 1851 census nor shown on the 6-inch 1st Edition Ordnance Survey but John Shortridge is listed living there in White's directory of 1852.  In July 1850 he made bids for property in a five-day bankruptcy sale of the Norton Hall estate.  After bidding for various lots including some substantial houses and a cutler’s mill, he eventually secured about 30 acres of land in four lots for £5500 at Broadfield, Heeley. Part almost certainly became the grounds of Chipping House and part was on the opposite side of Abbeydale Road, where he established a brickworks (Report of the sale: Sheffield Independent, 6 & 13 July 1850).
