A Great win for St. Vincent's Girls' Club We have already told our readers what a gallant and successful fight our girls were making to win the Evening Schools Shield. No praise can be too great for Miss Kavanagh, their instructress, and for the constant practice by which the girls availed themselves of her skilled instruction. Then the enthusiasm of Mrs. P.J. Benson was no small incentive because the uppermost thought in the girls mind was, If we were beaten, what will Mrs. Benson say? well the efforts of all were crowned with success, and in the Temperance Hall on April 29th the final bout was decided, amidst the great entusiasm. St. Vincent's and Sharrow Lane School, the contestants were backed bybig crowds of supporters, who followed the contest with unabating eagerness. The official report, as it appeared in the Sheffield Telegraph runs thus:- St. Vincent's Girls win in the Evening Schools' shield. The fianal of the first physical exercises competition for Sheffield evening school-girls took place at the Temperance Hall last night, when the girls of St. Vincent's and Sharrow Lane Schools contended for the shield given by Mr. R. Colver, in memory of his brother, the late Ald. Colver, who for 23 years was a member of the Sheffield Education Authority. Ald. Knowles presided, supported by the Lord Mayor (Col. G.E. Benson), Councillors S.G. Harrison, P.J. Benson and W.C. Fenton, Mr. A. Harland, Miss. E. Maxfield; Miss. Cleghorn and Mr. G.S. Baxter (secretary of the Education Committee). St. Vincent's won by the narrow margin of seven points. Mr. H.A. Cole was judge. the Lord Mayor, who had entered the room after the St. Vincent's girls had danced, asked them, as a special favour, to repeat the item. Congratulations to all!
