Original Caption reads: - SLAUGHTERHOUSES AND MEAT INSPECTION Up to 1930 the slaughtering of animals for human consumption was carried out in many cases in old badly constructed buildings. This photo which speaks for itself shows a series of such buildings situated at the side of the river Don...the Wicker. These buildings are demolished and the site is now Castlegate. It was in these unhygienic and badly lit buildings that the animals after being driven through the streets and dragged across from the lairage were slaughtered under the most difficult conditions. The inspection of the carcass after slaughter was rendered extremely difficult because of overcrowding, abscence of efficient lighting and other necessary amenities. In 1929 the Corporation Abattoir was erected and with the exception of three of the more modern types of slaughter houses, all the remainder were closed very soon afterwards. At the present time with the exception of a modern private slaughter house for horses all animals slaughtered for human consumption and for sale are dealt with at the Corporation abattoir, Cricket Inn Road, where it is possible under ideal conditions to ensure that all meat leaving the abattoir has been inspected and passed fit by qualified officers of the Public Health Department. The private slaughter house for horses which is within the precinct of the Corporation abattoir is dealt with in exactly the same manner.
