What's New

July 2008

Our latest additions to the Picture Sheffield website are now live! We have added around 500 new images to the site as part of our ongoing commitment to making more of our collections accessible online.
The latest instalment of 500 images added to the site include: -
• Modern images of the University area and Broomhill
• 150 images of the Sheffield Flood of 1864
• A visit by Edward Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) to the River Don Works
• Over 100 images of RAF Norton in the 1950s (see page 2)
• and many more pictures recording the history and experiences of our city and its people.

This brings the total number of images on the website to around 15,000.

We have undertaken a comprehensive data cleansing exercise to ensure that the main Picture Sheffield database and the Internet version are identical.

This is now complete, therefore we are looking at adding more material to the website. This will include modern images taken over the last three or four years. We employ a part-time photographer to record how Sheffield is changing over time and we are keen to post more of his work on the Picture Sheffield website.

Our intention is to post small batches of material every other month, starting at the beginning of September – so watch this space for more details!

Dates on pictures

We constantly receive E-mails pointing out 'wrong' dates on some of the photographs. Date information is restricted to the decade in which the photograph was taken. E.g. decade = 1910 means that the picture was taken between 1910 and 1919.
