Sheffield

Height 34 Width 22 At the great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace, London was exhibited this Norfolk Knife , a celebrated sporting knife which took craftsman William Barnforth two years to make. The scales are magnificently carved in Manila pearl, one depicting a boar hunt and the other a stag hunt. Many of the blades are etched or chased with hunting scenes, notable buildings and famous people. The Norfolk Knife was auctioned at Sotheby's in 1969 and bought by the Sheffield silverplate firm, Cooper Bros., who placed it on permanent loan at Cutlers Hall.
