Title:Old Horse Dyke' culvert, River Porter, junction of Cemetery Road and Ecclesall Road
Location:Sheffield_Sharrow
Date Period:1900-1919
Photographer:JWM
Notes:

The culvert was enclosed when the bank and Co-operative Society premises at the junction of Ecclesall Road and Cemetery Road were built. From Ecclesall Road, horses could walk down an incline into the dyke, and there was another incline on the opposite side for them to walk out again. The Rev. W. Odom, used to see the horses go in every day when he was a child and he used to play for hours on the side of the pool of water. Part of the site was used for the widening of South Street and the rest filled up. The site was where the shops now stand round the corner of The Moor and Ecclesall Road.
