At the time of the photograph the Mojo Club (or The King Mojo Club as it had become) was in the middle of a court case concerning a long running dispute with the surrounding neighbours with regard to excessive noise and all night sessions. (Sheffield Star 10th March 1966) The premises had been used as a ballroom dance hall for many years (Dey's Ballroom built by Billy Dey) before being acquired in February 1964 and opened March 1964 as the Mojo Club by Peter James Stringfellow, who lived there and ran it along with his brother Geoffrey. Many up and coming musicians in the Swinging Sixties played there before becoming famous. The dancing and raving stopped in 1967 at the end of a court case and the city magistrates refused planning permission for a private entertainments licence. Reopened as a Bingo Hall for awhile and despite plans to open as various other projects it stood empty for years before being bulldozed in 1982 for 12 houses to be built on the three quarters of an acre site with the intention of calling it Mojo Mews but became Firshill Mews.
