Underwood House was bought at the turn of the 20th century by the Catholic Church to be a convent and private school. The Sisters of Mercy came to Sheffield in 1883 from a convent in Commercial Road, London's East End, to teach at St. Catherines School. Initially they lived in Andover Street, then moved to Burngreave Road in 1884 adding a school to the building in 1908 adding more alterations in 1932. After 1975 the Convent High School was reorganised as a preparatory school. This was closed in 1979. In September 1982 the convent was transferred to No. 18 Taptonville Crescent.
