At a meeting of the City Council ... on 12th October 1921 ... It was unanimously resolved that this Council regrets that owing to advancing years Alderman William Henry Brittain has found it necessary to resign his position as an Alderman of the City, and they desire to acknowledge the valuable services which he has rendered as a member of the Council for a period of 50 years, he having been elected Alderman on 10th October 1883 and having served as Mayor during the years 1884 and 188, and as chairman of the Libraries and Museums Committee for 34 years, in addition to which he has served as a member of many other important committees of the Council. That a copy of this resolution, suitably engrossed on vellum and sealed with the Corporate Common Seal, be forwarded to Mr Brittain. Signed: W. F. Wardley, Lord Mayor and William E. Hart, Town Clerk.
