On 10 August 1824, the first manned balloon ascent from Sheffield was piloted by Mr Charles Brown. This was only his second balloon ascent and first solo flight. He took off from James Hibberson’s large garden in Sycamore Street, reaching an altitude of about a mile, before landing in a Rye field at Axholme.

The Balloon Tavern was later named to commemorate the occasion.
