James Hardcastle married Edith Murfitt (1879-1973), only daughter of Job Murfitt, postmaster, at the Woodhouse Wesleyan Church on 14th July 1903. James and Edith Hardcastle had a daughter Edith Doreen (born 1905). James worked as a tax collector, estate agent and secretary to the Gas Company. James and Edith were both active members of Woodhouse Wesleyan Church, including the church choir, with Edith becoming choir mistress and James Hardcastle organist.
