On 9 Oct 1993 Nelson Mandela visited Glasgow for the conferring of the Freedom of Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow, Greenwich, Hull, Islwyn, Midlothian, Newcastle and Sheffield. Cllr Mike Pye attended the event on behalf of the City of Sheffield. There was an Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) rally to welcome Nelson Mandela in George Square, Glasgow featuring Mara Louw (South African singer) and Archbishop Trevor Huddleston.
