Underwood House was bought at the turn of the 20th century by the Catholic Church to be a convent and private school. The Sisters of Mercy came to Sheffield in 1883 from a convent in Commercial Road, London's East End, to teach at St. Catherines School. Initially they lived in Andover Street, then moved to Burngreave Road in 1884 adding a school to the building in 1908 adding more alterations in 1932. After 1975 the Convent High School was reorganised as a preparatory school. This was closed in 1979. In September 1982 the convent was transferred to No. 18 Taptonville Crescent. The house was first referred to as Underwood House in the 1841 census, occupants Henry Cadman and family. He was the son of Charles Cadman (steel manufacturer)
