East Birley Pit, late 19th century, view from Sally Clarkes. Pit sunk 1888. In the distance is Cliff Wheel Wood, Linley Banks and foot-path. The two fields middle distance on right is now the Hackenthorpe estate. The taller of the two headgears is the downcast, to its left are screeens, to its right is the downcast engine house. The chimney serves the high pressure boilers; the 3 pitched roof building are from left to right the blacksmiths, fitters and joiners shops. Over the far right is the loco shed.
