1920-1939

Knur and Spell was played in the field next to the Angel Inn at Grenoside between 1920 and 1939. Residents complained because of broken windows.

In the 1920s Henry Mollart was the local champion. Herbert Watson Crawshaw and his son Ernest (Jim) of Bolsterstone were expert players. It was said that Herbert could drive a Knur from Green Moor Top into Station Road Deepcar. Jim's record was 262.5 yards, and at the Stocksbridge World Challenge, Yorkshire Sport put up a stake of pound;200 for anyone who could beat him. There were no challengers, so Jim became World Champion. The events was filmed by Pathe Gazette at Green Moor 1st April 1929.
