Oakbrook was built c. 1862 for Mark Firth, the title being suggested by the rivulet that runs through it. The grounds consisting of some 28 acres were beautifully laid out. The Prince and Princess of Wales were the guests of Mr Firth during their visit to Sheffield, and in 1879 Mr Firth also had the honour of entertaining the late Duke of Albany. Mr Laycock purchased Oakbrook c. 1894 and has since considerably improved and enlarged the grounds, and made alteraions to the interior of the house.
